The center provides dance makers and their collaborators with a wide array of research opportunities, working spaces, resources and time.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ballettheatreohio.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Ballet Theatre of Ohio<\/a> is the largest classic ballet company in Northeast Ohio. It has a broad classical and contemporary repertoire at various venues.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uakron.edu\/di\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The University of Akron\u2019s Dance Institute<\/a> offers a pre-college program for young dancers wishing to develop their talents with professional and UA dancers.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/balletexcelohio.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Cuyahoga Valley Youth Ballet<\/a> is a pre-professional dance company. It exposes dancers ages 8-18 to ballets staged and choreographed by professionals.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/akrondancefestival.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival<\/a>, which includes interactive children\u2019s programs, brings professional dance to Akron\u2019s parks.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neosdancetheatre.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Neos Dance Theatre<\/a>\u2014based at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uakron.edu\/ej\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall<\/a> at The University of Akron and the Oberlin Center for the Arts\u2014is a nonprofit professional company that performs both classical and contemporary choreography. The company dances in various venues in Northeast Ohio and has toured the country. Its proximity to the University\u2019s dance program benefits both students and professionals.<\/li>\n<li>Kelli Sanford, a graduate of The University of Akron\u2019s dance program, created the RED (real.edge.dance) in 2011. Based in Hudson, the group\u2019s modern style has been called dark and edgy. Clark Gable lived and worked in Akron before heading to Hollywood. Tony- and Emmy-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell (<em>Hamilton, The Wiz<\/em>) is a graduate of Akron\u2019s Buchtel High School.<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>The historic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akroncivic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Akron Civic Theater<\/a> on Main Street rocks the concert scene, but also features musicals such as <em>Sister Act<\/em> and the original <em>Next to Normal.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.edu\/porthouse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Porthouse Theatre<\/a> in Cuyahoga Falls, affiliated with Kent State University, presents outdoor musicals and dramas on the grounds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevelandorchestra.com\/Plan-Your-Visit\/Blossom-Music-Center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blossom Music Center.<\/a> Picnic before the show.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohioshakespearefestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Ohio Shakespeare Festival<\/a> doesn\u2019t limit itself to the Bard. The professional company puts on assorted dramas on the grounds of Stan Hywet Hall, the elegant mansion built a century ago by the founders of The Goodyear Tire &amp; Rubber Company. In winter, performances retreat to the historic Greystone Hall in downtown Akron. Don\u2019t miss ShakesBEER\u2014quaff and watch.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/weathervaneplayhouse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Weathervane Playhouse<\/a> in Akron\u2019s Merriman Valley is a community-based theater featuring local talent in crowd pleasers. It also holds acting camps for children and adults.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nonetoofragile.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">None Too Fragile Theater<\/a>, also in the Merriman Valley, shows professional, bold and relevant \u201coff Broadway\u201d plays.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubbercitytheatre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rubber City Shakespeare Company<\/a>, in its new home on Akron\u2019s north side, puts on reimagined classics plus community workshops. Pay as you can.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magicaltheatre.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Magical Theatre Company<\/a> puts on professional dramas and comedies for children in its recently renovated theater in downtown Barberton.<\/li>\n<li>Kent\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standingrock.net\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Standing Rock Cultural Arts<\/a> runs the New World Children\u2019s Theater at the North Water Street Gallery. It emphasizes original playwriting and the use of recycled materials for sets and props.<\/li>\n<li>At the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nightlightcinema.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nightlight Cinema<\/a> on Akron\u2019s High Street, patrons can sip a drink and watch fascinating, independent films with like-minded folk.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akronlibrary.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Akron-Summit County Public Library<\/a> shows entertaining and thoughtful films, often bringing in expert speakers to discuss them. It also offers movies for teens and kids.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gumdiptheatre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gum-Dip Theatre<\/a> involves the community in all phases of a production to encourage reflection and connection. (Gum-dipping was a step in tire building.)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/masueproductions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ma\u2019Sue Productions<\/a> is an Akron theater company created in 2011 to tell and celebrate traditional and original African American stories. Take your pick of indoor or outdoor, arena or intimate, jazz or indie.<\/li>\n<li>The Black Keys, composed of Akron natives Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach, play large venues such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketmortgagefieldhouse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse<\/a> in Cleveland, but got their start in Greater Akron clubs.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevelandorchestra.com\/Plan-Your-Visit\/Blossom-Music-Center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blossom Music Center<\/a>, an outdoor amphitheater in Cuyahoga Falls, is the summer home of the renowned Cleveland Orchestra. It also hosts big-name rock and country artists.<\/li>\n<li>The historic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekentstage.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kent Stage<\/a>, built in 1927, puts on about 150 concerts a year, the Kent Folk Festival, the Kent Blues Fest, Kent Reggae Fest, the Kent State Around Town Music Festival, film festivals and numerous plays.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.akroncivic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Akron Civic Theater<\/a> is one of only five remaining atmospheric theaters in the country where patrons sit under a twinkling star-lit sky and intermittent clouds.<\/li>\n<li>The 3,000-seat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uakron.edu\/ej\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall<\/a> on The University of Akron campus hosts concerts, speakers and straight-from-Broadway shows all year. It is home to the Akron Symphony.<\/li>\n<li>Next door to the Civic, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lock3live.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lock 3<\/a> is an outdoor amphitheater on the site of one of the old locks of the Ohio &amp; Erie Canal. It features cover bands and events throughout the spring and summer.<\/li>\n<li>The University of Akron\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/uasteelband.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steel Drum Band<\/a> was one of the first collegiate bands of its kind in the country. It plays concerts all over the world, including at its home in Guzzetta Hall on the UA campus. Guzzetta also hosts numerous performances of student and faculty ensembles open to the public.<\/li>\n<li>Greater Akron has developed a concentration of businesses that supply musicians with equipment. It includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audio-technica.com\/cms\/site\/c35da94027e94819\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Audio-Technica Corp.<\/a> (sound), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthquakerdevices.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EarthQuaker Devices<\/a> (handmade guitar pedals), <a href=\"https:\/\/sitstrings.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">S.I.T. String Co.<\/a> (guitar strings), <a href=\"https:\/\/mollard.com\/\">Mollard Conducting Batons<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panyard.com\/\">Panyard<\/a> (steel drum pans).<\/li>\n<li>Akron was once the Midwest\u2019s jazz corridor, a favorite stop for artists traveling from New York to Chicago. Today, The University of Akron\u2019s renowned jazz band, <a href=\"http:\/\/blujazzakron.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blu Jazz+<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lock3live.com\/page\/lock4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lock Bottom Jazz and Blues Club<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/rubbercityjazz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rubber City Jazz and Blues Festival<\/a> keep the beat.<\/li>\n<li>Greater Akron is a major site on the map of punk music. Devo of \u201cWhip It\u201d fame and the Pretenders\u2019 Chrissie Hynde are probably the most well-known punk\/new wave musicians to come out of 1970s Akron, but they were not alone. In a matter of a few years, major labels signed Akron\u2019s Chi Pig, the Waitresses, Tin Huey, the Bizarros, the Rubber City Rebels and Rachel Sweet. London\u2019s Stiff Records release an Akron compilation album. CBGB in New York City waived cover charges for people from Akron. A writer from <em>The Village Voice<\/em> put it this way in 1978: \u201cSomething is obviously going on out there.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The 1,500-seat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastendakron.com\/goodyear-theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Goodyear Theater<\/a>, once used only for employees of the tire company, has gone through a multi-million-dollar renovation, providing a state-of-the-art venue in the city\u2019s East End development.<\/li>\n<li>For a more complete list of live music and other cultural events, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/artsnow.org\/arts-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">artsnow.org\/arts-guide<\/a>. Watching baseball\u2019s rising stars at a bargain price and with a bellyful of burgers is a little slice of heaven.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s got a name almost as long as its course. It\u2019s the Akron Children\u2019s Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series. The fun begins with an 8K in June and a half marathon and 10K in August. They lead up to the marquee marathon, half marathon and team relays in September. About 120,000 volunteers help the event go off smoothly, and it seems half the population lines the route to cheer. The Goodyear Tire &amp; Rubber Company and FirstEnergy Corp. are among the corporate sponsors.<\/li>\n<li>Like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akronmarathon.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Akron Marathon<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/towpathtrilogy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Towpath Trilogy<\/a> is a race series. It begins with a half marathon in April, a 10-mile or 10K run in June culminating in a marathon along the historic Towpath Trail at the height of leaf season in October.<\/li>\n<li>Wadsworth was once a center for matchmaking\u2014literally. It was home to the famous Blue Tip match company. The <a href=\"https:\/\/matchstickrace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matchstick Challenge<\/a> (Take your pick of a 5K, 10K or half marathon.) takes place during the city\u2019s five-day Blue Tip Festival in June.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohioeriecanal.org\/century-ride.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Huntington Bank Century Ride<\/a> is a 101-mile bike ride through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohioanderiecanalway.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ohio &amp; Erie Canalway<\/a>, which Congress has designated a National Heritage Area.<\/li>\n<li>If walking is more your speed, try the fall and spring hiking sprees through the <a href=\"http:\/\/hikingspree.summitmetroparks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Summit Metro Parks.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The University of Akron\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ZipsMSOC\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">men\u2019s soccer team<\/a>, one-time national champs, is regularly ranked in the Top 10 in the NCAA men&#8217;s soccer poll. The team has cultivated many of Major League Soccer\u2019s best players. There are 20-25 UA grads in the MLS at any give time; many others play internationally. Join the AK-Rowdies, a raucous group that cheers at UA games.<\/li>\n<li>Although there are plenty of sports in Greater Akron, we\u2019ve been known to travel a half hour north to watch the professional Cleveland teams: the red-hot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/indians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indians<\/a> (MLB), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/cavaliers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cavaliers<\/a> (NBA) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevelandbrowns.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Browns<\/a> (NFL).<\/li>\n<li>Derby Downs, on Akron\u2019s east side, has been the home of the FirstEnergy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soapboxderby.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">All-American Soap Box Derby<\/a> since it was built as a WPA project in 1936. <em>USA Today<\/em> and <em>National Geographic<\/em> have called the derby an \u201cicon\u201d of Americana. The racers reach speeds in excess of 30 mph, which may not sound fast until you\u2019re sitting in a car, dropping down a 16 percent grade. And that\u2019s a possibility.
