We Are Proudly Diverse.

The Akron Public Schools translates all of its announcements into 60 different languages. Greater Akron is diverse. And it’s been that way from its earliest days when many immigrants came to work on the Ohio & Erie Canal and later in the tire factories.
The International Institute in Akron’s North Hill welcomes new Americans and helps them settle into their homes in Greater Akron. North Hill has attracted immigrants for decades, and the vibrant mix of cultures is apparent in the area’s restaurants, shops and clubs. Going back in time, you’d find North Hill full of the new arrivals from Italy, Ireland, central and eastern Europe, and, most recently, Nepal and Bhutan.
Diversity enriches all of us personally and professionally, and it enhances our community in myriad ways. Making sure we’re welcoming and open to all is critical to us.
